What pleasantly surprised me, though, was how refreshingly different these young activists were from the stereotypes. While they have clearly chosen, for a variety of personal reasons, to make abortion their primary issue, they were hardly card-carrying members of the Religious Right. When I brought up the notion of a "seamless garment of life

.. it seems to me that those who resist creation care sometimes are motivated by a misreading of scripture. He goes on to name three other factors that have led to this conservative opposition to protecting our earth: a "profound mishandling of science," an "inordinate loyalty to laissez-faire capitalism," and an "inordinat

He's taken America to war against two countries. He's brought down our economy TREMENDOUSLY. He's created more and more terrorists. He's lowered the value of the dollar. He's letting China get past our economy and be a stronger nation then us. He's still got 1 more year of office! He kills people for OIL! And this man is a CHRISTIAN? not th

What the Christian scholars often overlook is the interesting phenomenon of later gospel manuscripts knowing more details than the earlier ones! This is a clear indication that those details were never part of the original oral and written accounts but were inserted into the later copies.

The events of the last weekend in Egypt have not been positive for the minority Christian Coptic Community. On Friday in a response to the construction of a new church in a village south of Cairo, Behma, around 300 Muslims rioted and 10 Coptic worshippers were injured. What does violence against the Copts though say about Egyptian society?

Contrary to their proclaimed intentions, Christianity and Islam have both been the greatest causes of hostility in the modern world. The Tit-for-Tat Revenge Policy, which dates back to the Medieval Crusades, is still alive and kicking across the globe. With a few well-chosen words, ministers can inspire wars, simply, by invoking the presence of the

When did it come to the point that being a Christian meant only caring about two issues,Ã; abortion and homosexuality? Poverty? Whatever. Homelessness? An afterthought. A widening gap between the have and have-nots? Immaterial. Divorce? The divorce rate of Christians mirrors the national average, so that's no big deal.

This war has often been cloaked in the name and symbols of our faith, confused American imperial designs with God's purposes, and tragically discredited Christian faith around the world, having so tied it to flawed American behavior and agendas. People around the world sadly believe this is a Christian war. America is not the hope of the earth and

About the Jesus tomb discovery: As Christians eagerly anticipate the good news called Easter, a publisher announces a new discovery, making the claim that the Christian gospel has neither a good Friday nor some good news. The genre is old, the trick has been seen before, and the American public knows the game.

Further, a founding document of so-called neoconservatism claimed that, "Over the long term, Iran may well prove as large a threat to U.S. interests in the Gulf as Iraq has" (and we all know how swimmingly our project in Iraq has gone!). So, unfortunately, it does seem necessary to make and defend the obvious claim: Christian faith is inc

Many consider this "an unholy alliance of religious and political power." In our contemporary setting, when someone is charged with Constantinianism, they are being charged with too closely uniting these two - religious and political power - so that the church begins to see the state and legislation as a way to accomplish its goals.

Murder and terror do not figure in the teachings of the monotheist world religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Yet time and again, their fanatical followers embark on bloody rampages, their rage fired up by zealous priests and religious scholars.

In recent years, the Left and even the Democrats managed to appear hostile to faith and to people in faith communities. Regardless of what one's views of the divine are, that's called shooting yourself in the foot.

"The monologue of the Religious Right is over, and a new dialogue has now begun." We have now entered the post-Religious Right era. Though religion has had a negative image in the last few decades, the years ahead may be shaped by a dynamic and more progressive faith that will make needed social change more possible.

Sigmund Freud would have something to say about the ways in which we evangelicals seem to be fixated on homosexuality. That fixation became abundantly clear to me recently when I was doing radio interviews upon the publication of my most recent book, Letters to a Young Evangelical. The book has 21 chapters, yet on every one of the two dozen intervi

As the people of God we are being challenged to examine our hearts and the authenticity of our own faith by the presence of undocumented neighbors struggling for survival in our own backyards. Like the religious leaders and fear-filled individuals who walked past and around the man who was laying on the side of road in Jesus' good Samaritan story,

It's a political fact now that faith communities across the board, very widely, are in favor of increasing the minimum wage. Why is that? What's the theological foundation behind that? We don't just do politics; we do politics because of our faith.

Like the Oscar-nominated documentary, Jesus Camp, Pelosi's movie lets evangelicals speak for themselves. After President Bush's State of the Union address, Bush barely uttered the words "poverty" or "the poor." It's as though our president has taken Jesus' words in Matthew ("the poor you will always have with you") to justify making scant mention of their crushing needs in what is arguably the most important political spe
